Auxiliary Boating Classes

AMERICA'S BOATING COURSE

If you are interested in an exciting, in-depth boating safety course, check out this beginner boating class it will give you the knowledge needed to obtain a boat license or safety certification in many states. Many boat insurance companies will offer discounts on boating insurance to boaters who successfully complete America's Boating Course.

NAVIGATION (NAV)

The U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary's Navigation course is a comprehensive course to prepare the boater with the knowledge needed to safely pilot a boat. Taught in two parts, the course begins with Basic Navigation (Chapters 1-6) then concludes with Advanced Navigation (Chapters 7-12).

LET'S GO SAILING
Let's Go Sailing (LGS) is a fun course for beginning sailors. The course is designed for the person who wants to begin sailing in a small boat, learning each step the right way, and in the process build the skills and confidence that will serve as the foundation for a lifetime of enjoyment It uses a short, well illustrated text published by the American Sailing Association to introduce fledgling sailors to the equipment, nomenclature and safe operation of small sailboats. Each of the text's four chapters has review questions and there is an extensive glossary and index. The course has it's own exam and certificate of accomplishment.

BOATING SKILLS & SEAMANSHIP (BS&S)

The U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary's Boating Skills and Seamanship (BS&S) course is a comprehensive course designed for both the experienced and the novice boater.  The course, now in its 12th edition published in 2002, consists of 6 core required two- to four-hour lessons 2 added optional lessons that are normally included in the core course, plus five elective lessons, providing up-to-date knowledge for handling boats in all conditions.

1. Please register at the Kennewick Recreation and Community Services, 210 W. 6th Ave or at web site www.ci.kennewick.wa.us Registration cost is $6.00 for Kennewick residents / $9.00 for non-residents. For more information regarding registration call Kennewick Recreation Services at (509) 585-4293. Please tell the registrar how many family members are being included.

2. A material cost of $20 per person and $10 for each additional family member using the same text will be payable to the instructor at the first class. Make those checks payable to "USCG Auxiliary Flotilla 85."

3. A material cost of $30 per person  will be payable to the instructor at the first class. Make those checks payable to "USCG Auxiliary Flotilla 85."

4. Students passing the class will receive certificates. The class meets new state requirements for power boat operators for Washington and Oregon. For information call John Umbarger, USCG Auxiliary at 509-544-0935. Plan to arrive 20 minutes early for the first class.

Boating Skills and Seamanship (BS&S) Course”

The USCG Auxiliary will be teaching its 26-hour Boating Skills and Seamanship (BS&S) course that is a comprehensive course designed for both the experienced and the novice boater.  The class is taught in thirteen (13) segments: 

  April 6,9,13,16,20,23,27,30, May 4,7,11,14,and 18, from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM on Monday and Thursday evenings.  Location is Kennewick’s Frost Municipal Building located at 1010 E. Chemical Drive, not far off the footing of the Cable Bridge. Plan to arrive 20 minutes early for the first class.

You must pre-register at Kennewick Recreation and Community Services located at City Hall, 210 W. 6th Ave. or web site www.ci.kennewick.wa.us.  Registration cost per person is $6 for Kennewick city residents and $9 for non-residents.  For more information regarding registration, call Kennewick Recreation Services at 509-585-4293. A materials cost of $27 per person and ($5 for each additional family member that will get their own Supplement Book and share the BSS Book) will be payable by cash or check made payable to the “US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 85” at the first class.  Students passing the class will receive certificates and a card.  For information call Alex DeLaPena, USCG Auxiliary, at 509-539-9517.
